The legislative district is represented in Congress by U.S. Representative Leonard Boswell and U.S. Senator Tom Harkin.
The district’s largest population center is in Des Moines, the state’s largest city and the area’s economic, cultural, and governmental center. Many insurance companies are based in Des Moines, such as The Principal Financial Group, Allied Insurance, Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa, and FBL Financial Group, Inc.
Pleasant Hill is another vibrant community just east of Des Moines. According to the official website of Pleasant Hill:

The city is situated at the intersection of Iowa 163 and US Highway 65, part of the Des Moines Metropolitan Area’s freeway system. Along with the entire metro area, Pleasant Hill has experienced rapid growth over the last ten years, with a growth rate of nearly 40%. Pleasant Hill is less than ten minutes from downtown Des Moines and the Iowa State Capitol and fifteen minutes from the Des Moines International Airport.Pleasant Hill provides an anchor for entertainment on the east side of Des Moines, with a multiplex movie theater.
